Why Were The 6 Paths Of Pain Ninja From Jiraiya’s Past?

So why were the 6 paths of pain all shinobi that Jiraiya had met in his travels? While there are no concrete answers as it was never spelled out to us, there are a couple theory’s that make the most sense that we can discuss.

Pure chance

This is the most likely of answers. Jiraiya was an old man, and traveled to lands for many many years.

Jiraiya has a very powerful memory, and has probably encountered more shinobi than any other shinobi living.

This would make it improbable, but possible that Nagato just collected random shinobi, and Jiraiya just so happened to meet them in the past.

Time Spent Training with Jiraiya

Having been taught and rescued by Jiraiya, Nagato built up a lot of respect for him, thinking of him as a hero. Jiraiya likely told a lot of stories to him and read him parts from his book, including the various people he had met and fought.

So Nagato is likely to have at least a second-hand association with these people, and may have had an inherent interest in those meaningfully associated to Jiraiya.

A way to defeat Jiraiya

Nagato knew the extent of Jiraiya’s power. From Nagatos perspective, he may have perceived Jiraiya as the biggest threat to the Akatsuki.

During their fight, Jiraiya points out that there isn’t another shinobi alive that could get as close as he could to Pain. Using Yahiko, and others from Jiraiya’s past, Nagato was able to conceal his secret from Jiraiya for the majority of the fight allowing Nagato to defeat him.

Nagato points out that if Jiraiya would have known his secret sooner, he would have won the fight.

A “Open Ending”

A open ending is when a author or writer doesn’t fully explain a particular scenario, and leaves it rather ambiguous, thus leaving it to the readers to determine what happened on their own. This would explain why Kishimoto never went into this matter at all, and left it totally in he air. This makes he most sense to me, and makes Pain/Nagato one of the most interesting and complex characters in the series.
